Belichick: Waters situation ‘the same as minicamp'

FOXBORO -- Count Bill Belichick among those who are not surprised by Brian Waters' absence.

The veteran guard did not report to training camp yesterday, but Belichick said today that Waters' situation is "basically the same as it was in minicamp."

Back in June, Belichick said that Waters had been excused from minicamp for personal reasons.

"Obviously he had a great year," Belichick said at the time. "He played a lot and he played well."

It sounds as though the Patriots are depending on Waters to work what Patriots Insider Tom E. Curran calls "banker's hours." They likely trust him to arrive to Foxboro before the season begins -- he showed up last year during the first week in September -- and be in good shape when he gets here.

Yesterday, Waters was mum on his plans for this season.

"Im not really talking about it, youll have to talk to the Patriots about it, he told Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe. At this moment, Im not really discussing the situation. Right now Im just handling things between me and the team. If they want to talk to you, thats fine but Im not really talking about it.

Youre just going to have to talk to the team. Im allowing them to handle all the media stuff right now. Were going to do it this way, because its the best way to do it.

When Belichick was asked today about the chances of Waters retiring, he was similarly deflective.

"You'll have to ask him," Belichick said.

The coach was then told that Waters had already directed all questions back to him, and he smiled.

"I couldn't comment on anybody else's career," Belichick said. "Playing, not playing, anything like that. That's for them to talk about not me."

So we continue to wait on word from Waters. But the man in charge doesn't seem to be all that concerned.
