EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Patriots end the first quarter on the brink of the game's first points, penetrating to the Jets 3-yard line.

(They scored on the first play of the quarter on a third-down dart to Wes Welker after the Jets butchered zone coverage and left Welker open).

New England's best previous drive ended with a hooked field goal by Stephen Gostkowski from 38 yards away.

The Jets best scoring chance ended when Mark Sanchez threw a red-zone pick to Steve Gregory on a crossing route. It was Sanchez' sixth red-zone turnover of the season.

The Patriots put up 73 yards on the ground in the first quarter and 120 overall. The Jets have a passing yard.
