PHILADELPHIA -- We’re in Philly this morning.
Got here last night around 7:30. Had a fat sausage and extra cheese omelette and two pancakes at the Broad Street Diner. Drove in circles trying to find the Residence Inn City Center which I passed about 11 times before finding the entrance. Checked in. Wasted time. Wrote a Zach Sudfeld post. Continued reading “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” on my Kindle (main takeaway so far: Hitler=Ass&#@$). Fell asleep.
Now, refreshed, I’ll be heading over to the Patriots-Eagles shared practice at the NovaCare Complex. Bill Belichick has a press conference at noon. Practice starts at 12:30. We have access post-practice around 2:20 (Tom Brady is scheduled to speak).
The Eagles have some irons in the fire these days. They have chaos at the quarterback position with Michael Vick, Nick Foles and Matt Barkley all in the mix for new head coach Chip Kelly. Riley Cooper was filmed using a hateful word and has taken a leave of absence to get himself together (aside from spending the whole day thinking, “I’m such a piece of &%#&, I’ll never say that again and I now clearly understand how wrong and hurtful it was to utter -- or even think -- the word in the first place” I can’t imagine Cooper’s leave is productive except to remove the distraction of having him with the team). And Kelly is in his first year as head coach so the attendant curiosity of whether his offensive genius demonstrated in college can translate to the pros is in the early stages of being answered.
We’ll give some practice observations from both teams today. I’m definitely interested in seeing how the Patriots young receivers operate against a new set of defenders. Also, I’m expecting the Patriots secondary to look very competent against the Eagles offense. And I’m curious to see if Michael Vick believes Tim Tebow has to overcome some of the things Vick experienced when he entered the league or if Vick sees Tebow’s path as far different.
Your boy Mike Giardi is down here as well and we’ll be on TV in SportsNet Central at 6 and 10:30 p.m.
I’ll be in touch.
