Doc: Pat Summitt 'is responsible for women's basketball'

BOSTON Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers' post-game press conference was over, but Rivers clearly had something that was heavy on his mind -- and heart, apparently.
He began to speak about Tennessee legend Pat Summitt, who earlier in the day had announced her retirement as the Lady Vols' head coach after nearly four decades.
Ive loved being the head coach at Tennessee for 38 years, but I recognize that the time has come to move into the future and to step into a new role, Summitt said in the statement.
Summit, 59, was diagnosed with early onset of Alzeihmer's disease less than a year ago.
"I want to finish (the press conference) with Pat Summitt retired," Rivers said.
"She's a " and with that, Rivers had to pause, gather his emotions and tuck them away for him to get out a message that wasn't going to be your run-of-the-mill-best-wishes spiel that you so often hear, but rarely feel.
" she's a neat lady," said Rivers, his voice trembling. "I just think it's really sad in a lot of ways; not basketball, but everything. I didn't want to get emotional, but I'm an emotional person. When you see a giant like that leave the game, and leave the game because of health, it's just sad."
"She is responsible for women's basketball," he added. "She's not just a women's basketball coach, she's a great coach. And you know, I'm in this, and the longer I'm in this I just realize how much coaching means to all of us."
Summitt's retirement, comes at the same time that 71-year-old Larry Brown appears on the cusp of becoming the next coach at SMU.
"It just tells you how much it's in your blood and how much you love it," Rivers said. "And for her not to be able to do it, for me is very sad."
A seven-time National Coach of the Year with the Lady Vols, Summitt won eight national championships, 16 SEC championships and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.

Steve Bulpett believes Danny Ainge needs to have a great draft, and sign great free agents this offseason in order for the Celtics to compete for a championship next year after making no trades.
