KANSAS CITY -- Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore back.

The Boston Globe was the first to report the story.

Youkilis doesn't have any major structural issues, but he may have an injection as he rehabs his back.

The Red Sox recalled catcher Ryan Lavarnway from Pawtucket to take Youkilis' spot on the roster, according to the report.

Lavarnway has hit .284 with 14 home runs and 38 RBI with the Red Sox' Triple A affiliate, but he's currently mired in a 5-for-40 slump.
