Talking Points: Wright tosses six shutout innings after homer

Share

STAR OF THE GAME: Steven Wright

When Wright gave up a two-run homer to Jose Abreu in the top of the first, it looked like it was going to be another one of those nights. But that was the last bit of damage done against the knuckleballer who tossed six shutout innings after the homer in the best start of his brief major league career.

HONORABLE MENTION: David Ortiz

Ortiz was 3-for-3 off Chris Sale, with a run-scoring double in the first, an opposite-field infield single (!) in the fourth and a run-scoring line single to center in the fourth.

GOAT OF THE GAME: Chris Sale

Sale has been the most dominant starter in the American League, but not on this night, when he was decidedly off his game. The tall lefty was pounded for a dozen hits and seven runs in his worst start since April 30.

TURNING POINT: Three straight two-out singles -- none of them particularly hard-hit -- in the fifth inning produced two runs, giving the Red Sox a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

BY THE NUMBERS: With a 3-for-4 night at the plate, Xander Bogaerts is hitting .386 in July.
