Talking Points: Red Sox 5, Athletics 4

STAR OF THE GAME: Pablo Sandoval

Returning to the Bay Area where he played for seven seasons, Sandoval didn't do much in his first four trips to the plate. But in the top of the 11th, behind 0 and-2 in the count, he lined a go-ahead homer to right.

HONORABLE MENTION: Mookie Betts

Continuing his recent hot streak at the plate, Betts collected two more hits, both of which drove in runs. He singled home Blake Swihart in the fifth, then delivered Xander Bogaerts with a run-scoring single in the seventh.

GOAT OF THE GAME: Angel Castro.

Bad enough to give up the game-winning homer in extra innings. Worse still when that homer comes on an 0-and-2 pitch.

TURNING POINT: The A's had baserunners in both the ninth and 10th, but both times, the Red Sox bullpen managed to leave them stranded.

BY THE NUMBERS: The win was the first in the big leagues for reliever Matt Barnes.
