Talking Points: Red Sox 2, Rays 0

STAR OF THE GAME: Rick Porcello

Porcello became the first Red Sox starter to pitch at least seven innings on three separate occasions this season and he was masterful in the process, allowing eight hits -- all of them singles -- but no runs over seven innings.

It was exactly the kind of pitching performance the Sox needed, since they could manage just a single run themselves.

HONORABLE MENTION: Mookie Betts

For the first five innings, the Red Sox didn't have a hit. Then Betts led off the bottom of the sixth by slamming a pitch off the Sports Authority sign in the back of the Monster Seats for his third homer of the season, accounting for the only run of the game

GOAT OF THE GAME: James Loney

Loney had four plate appearances and was hitless. In his first three at-bats, he had runners on base each time, including two teammates on in the fifth when he made the final out of the inning on a soft tapper back to the mound.

TURNING POINT: Through the five innings, the Red Sox had just three baserunners -- two via walks and one via an error -- and had only one runner in scoring position. But Betts provided the only hit -- and run -- the Sox would need with his leadoff homer in the sixth.

BY THE NUMBERS: The Red Sox have two shutout wins this season -- and both have come against the Rays.
