Report: Sox haven't allowed Cubs to talk to Epstein

On Saturday there was some speculation that Theo Epstein would be allowed by the Red Sox to talk to the Cubs about their vacant general manager position.

"I am shocked, but in last 36 hrs every exec talk to says believe Redsox will give permission and Theo will go to Cubs to be GM," tweeted Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Not so fast, says Dan Roche of WBZ. Roche reports that the Red Sox have not given Epstein permission to talk to the Cubs.

"Reports of Theo Epstein being given permission by redsox ownership to speak to the Cubs are absolutely not true," Roche tweeted Saturday night.

There is one year left on Epstein's contract as general manager of the Red Sox. He would need permission from Red Sox ownership before he could speak with any other teams about their openings.
