Report: Price nearly joined Cardinals until Sox upped offer

It was reported last week that the Red Sox would “go $30-40 million above anyone else" to sign free agent pitcher David Price.

It appears they ended up using that card to convince him to come to Boston.

According to Bob Nightingale of USA Today, David Price nearly joined the St. Louis Cardinals on a seven-year deal until the Red Sox offered $30 million more “in the eleventh hour” despite being “enamored” with the idea of going to St. Louis.

The seven-year, $217 million contract Price ended up signing with the Red Sox is the largest ever given to a pitcher and the richest in club history.

Also according to the report, the Red Sox were also in discussions with free agent starter Zack Greinke before Price decided to come to Boston.
