Red Sox reportedly sign outfielder Chris Young

The Red Sox have made their first big free agent splash - but not one that will help things from the mound.

Outfielder Chris Young has signed a multi-year deal with the team, according to multiple reports.

Young is a right-handed bat that seems to be the ideal fourth outfielder for the Sox, one who could platoon with Jackie Bradley Jr.

He batted .252 with a .773 OPS, 20 doubles, 14 homers and 42 RBIs in 140 games (356 plate appearances) last season for the Yankees. But if he’s to be used mostly against lefties, the numbers drastically improve. He hit .327 with a .972 OPS in 181 plate appearances against lefties last year. He’s a career .263 hitter against lefties over 1,406 plate appearances.

In 21 games at Fenway, Chris Young is a career .344 hitter with a 1.054 OPS, 3 HR and 12 RBI.

Young has 73 plate appearances at Fenway Park over his career, where he’s batted .344 with a 1.054 OPS, three home runs, and 12 RBI.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal was first to report the signing.
