Red Sox' recent success strengthens Lovullo's resume

Torey Lovullo has helped himself with his performance as Red Sox interim manager.

Who knows what will happen to manager John Farrell and the coaching staff?

Farrell continues to undergo treatment for lymphoma and will do so through the middle of next month. He's under contract for two more seasons, having been given an extension in spring training, but has heard little about his job security from president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

Still, one thing's for certain -- as Farrell recuperates, Lovullo has done a terrific job in his place. The Red Sox have gone 19-12 since Lovullo took over as interim manager on Aug. 14.

It's been a delicate situation, stepping in for his friend. Lovullo has handled it deftly.

Out of deference to Farrell, Lovullo has refused to use the manager's office either at home or the road. But while he's the interim manager, he's taken charge and gotten strong play from his players over the past month.

Lovullo was already viewed as managerial material in recent years, having interviewed in both Minnesota and Texas last off-season. This recent interim stint can only boost his credentials.

It would surprise no one if Lovullo's job in the final two months of the season made his even more attractive to a rival club this winter.
