BOSTON -- Ryan Lavarnway's time in the major leagues lasted less than a week.
In his first at-bat Thursday night, Lavarnway -- recalled from Pawtucket on Monday to replace Mike Napoli, who was placed on the disabled list because of a finger injury -- felt some soreness in his left wrist after a swing. When he got to the on-deck circle for his next at-bat several innings later, the pain was so strong that he couldn't hit. He came out of the game and was replaced by Daniel Nava.
On Friday, it was discovered that Lavarnway had broken the hamate bone in his wrist. Surgery was being scheduled Friday.
Lavarnway is expected to be out at least until the All-Star break in mid-July. He was placed on the DL and PawSox outfielder Alex Hassan has taken his spot on the roster.
