TORONTO -- The Sox optioned Heath Hembree back to Pawtucket and called up Edwin Escobar to replace him in the bullpen.
Escobar, who had been starting in Pawtucket, was needed in case starter Joe Kelly didn't go deep into the game.
"He's here for bullpen depth,'' said Farrell. "If something unforeseen happens tonight, we've got to cover ourselves.''
The Sox utilized five pitchers in their 11-inning win over Toronto Tuesday and needed some stretched out in case they needed multiple innings.
This is Escobar's second stretch with the club. He joined them in Anaheim for the same reason and was returned to Pawtucket the next day.
It will likely happen again for Escobar, who will be returned to the minors to make room for a starter for Friday in Tampa.
The Red Sox haven't announced a start for that spot, but it will likely be Anthony Ranaudo.
