Red Sox believe Sandoval and Swihart will avoid DL

KANSAS CITY -- Though neither third baseman Pablo Sandoval nor catcher Blake Swihart were in the lineup Sunday, it appears that the Red Sox will be able to avoid making DL moves for the players who were injured Saturday night.

"Both guys are sore,'' reported John Farrell. "We don't anticipate that this is a DL situation for either at this point, but it's unlikely that either are available today. (The off-day on the schedule Monday) comes at a good time. We'll see how they respond to treatment today or tomorrow. Whatever testing is needed will be determined over the course of the next 24 hours or so.

"But hopefully, this is short-term for both guys.''

With Sandoval sidelined with a sprained left ankle, Brock Holt got the nod at third base. Sandoval was able to do some light running in the outfield before the game.

The Sox also have other options at third the next few days, with Travis Shaw available at third in addition to Holt.

Behind the plate, it gets a little trickier with Swihart down with a sprain of his left foot, near the small toe area.

"Today, (the emergency catcher) would be Nap (Mike Napoli),'' said Farrell. "If something happens to Sandy (Leon) in today's game, Nap is more than capable and ready if called upon.''

Napoli hasn't caught in a game since 2012, when he appeared behind the plate for 72 games while with the Texas Rangers. When it was discovered that he had a degenerative hip condition after signing with the Red Sox, Napoli was forced to abandon catching duties.

In the short-term, the Sox don't have any other catchers on the 40-man roster. Humberto Quintero has played well for Pawtucket and has some major league experience, but isn't on the 40-man roster.

Ryan Hanigan is on the 60-day DL, but isn't eligible to return until July 1.
