It all came together for the Red Sox in 2013 and it led to their third World Series title in the past 10 years.
Most of the same cast returns and many of the key players in that championship run are among Lou Merloni and Trenni Kusnierek's picks for most important Red Sox as this season opens.
No. 1 for Kusnierek is David Ortiz: "I think he's their most consistent hitter," she said. "He's also sort of the glue that holds that clubhouse together. He's not so happy right now. He wants that [contract] extension."
Merloni's top pick in Jon Lester: "To be quite honest with you, I'm not sure this team knows what to do if he doesn't make those 30 or 32 starts," he said. "You've got to have an ace."
Closer Koji Uehara and a healthy Clay Bucchholz make up the rest of Kusnierek's top three. Merloni goes with Ortiz and Will Middlebrooks as his next two.
