Porcello activated, will start Wednesday vs. White Sox

The Red Sox get a big piece of their pitching staff back Wednesday night as Rick Porcello returns to the mound. How much of a good thing that is remains to be seen.

Porcello was activated from the 15-day disabled list and will pitch against the White Sox in the series finale.

He was placed on the DL back on Aug. 2 after experiencing triceps soreness during his last start on July 29, in which he was hit around against these very same White Sox in just two-plus innings of work, allowing six runs on 10 hits.

Porcello, who enters Wednesday's game with a disappointing 5.81 ERA and 1.44 WHIP, made two rehab starts in Short-A Lowell and Pawtucket where he posted a 2.89 ERA (3 ER/9.1 IP).  With the PawSox last Friday, he struck out six batters in 5.2 innings, allowing three runs.

But how he performs back in the majors will be the big question. Porcello, historically a groundball pitcher, is having trouble keeping the ball down this season. He's allowed 20 home runs, seven of which came in July.

The triceps injury was something that just popped up in his last start, so that can't be attributed to his struggles. Perhaps some time off was the best thing for him.

To make room on the roster, the Red Sox optioned reliever Jonathan Aro to the PawSox.
