TORONTO -- David Ortiz, who had missed the previous two games after fouling a ball off his right foot Sunday, returned to the lineup Wednesday.
"He and I spoke this morning,'' said John Farrell. "He felt better and he and I wanted to make sure that he went through some treatment and did some running here today. But he's good to go.''
While Ortiz returned, Yoenis Cespedes, who knocked in runs in each of the first two games of the series, was not, given a night off by Farrell.
"We're just rotating guys through,'' said Farrell. "It's a chance to get him off his feet for a day. He'll be available at any point during the game.''
With Cespedes out, the Sox shifted Daniel Nava to left field and had Allen Craig in right as part of their outfield alignment.
Xander Bogaerts was cleared by MLB to return from the seven-day concussion DL. He's eligible to do so Saturday.
Bogaerts passed cognitive and physical tests administered by MLB and will rejoin the Sox in Tampa Thursday.
"He's passed everything,'' said Farrell. "He's gone through some running and throwing (in Boston) and he'll go through a full work day on Friday and then be ready for Friday.''
