OAKLAND -- The Red Sox began their 10-game road trip without David Ortiz in the their lineup.

Ortiz, who homered in the bottom of the 10th inning Wednesday to help the Red Sox win their homestand finale, was given the night off as the Sox took in the A's in the first of four.

The presence of A's starter Scott Kazmir -- against whom Ortiz was just 10-for-48 -- was likely a factor, but so, too, was the team's travel schedule and the wish to not push Ortiz too much.

The Sox had a nearly four-hour delay leaving Boston and didn't arrive in the Bay Area until after 4 a.m. Eastern time.

"With as late as we got in here in (Wednesday) night,'' said John Farrell, "it's not uncommon that he's got a day off. We try to manage his games with the first game on the West Coast. I fully expect him to be back in the lineup (Friday).''
