Mookie Betts' availability Friday unclear after knee injury

CLEVELAND — It’s wait and see on the knee.

Mookie Betts twice hit his right knee in the same spot while playing right field Thursday night at Progressive Field, leading to his seventh-inning exit in a 13-6 Red Sox loss to the Indians.

“I think initially it was going back when I ran into the wall, and then you know I kind of hit it there, but I was fine. I was able to kind of play through it,” Betts said. “Then when I jumped on that ball going back, I came down and I landed on that same spot and that’s when it got pretty tough to — well, pretty tender.

“There was no twist or anything, I think it was just impact.”

Betts is considered day-to-day and manager John Farrell said after the game no MRI had been planned.

It’s an area where Betts has had trouble before. He underwent surgery on the knee in October: arthroscopy, chondroplasty, and a loose body removal, per the team’s announcement at the time. But Farrell said there was no extra concern at this point because of the past operation.

Betts’ status for Friday’s game was not stated, but he did appear to have a slight limp in the clubhouse afterward.

“Come in tomorrow and kind of see,” Betts said. “I'm not going to say I can't play tomorrow or say I can. I'll just come in and see and hope I'll be ready to go.”

In the sixth inning, Betts banged both knees into the wall going after Yandy Diaz’s triple. In the seventh, he didn’t come down with a Jose Ramirez double that was roped to right, planting on the right knee and then falling to the ground. (There seemed to be more impact for the knee upon planting than he wound up on the ground.)

Betts stayed in for one more batter after Ramirez’s double.
