The Red Sox have suddenly started to play well, winning seven of their last eight games.

And Lou Merloni thinks that, among the Red Sox players at least, there's still hope something can be salvaged from the season.

"As long as they are where they are right now, I still believe that these guys think they're in it," Merloni told Michael Felger on Sports Sunday.

But, he warns, it won't be easy.

"Do they have a long road? Absolutely," said Merloni, later adding: "They got to play really good baseball and pass eight teams just to get in [the playoffs] still."

Should the Sox be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline?

"If you can buy a long-term bat answer for the outfield, you buy," said Merloni. "I don't care if you were 20 games out or three games out. You do that no matter what.

"The only white flag to me would be Koji Uehara because you can't trade a closer and think you're going to win… If you see Koji gone that's a white flag, and you can't do that yet."
