Merloni: I ‘caution' fans who celebrate Lucchino departure

Larry Lucchino, who has served as president and CEO of the Red Sox since John Henry purchased the team in 2002, is stepping down.

While Lucchino may not be the most popular man in Boston, Lou Merloni explains why fans shouldn't be too excited about his departure.

"I know a lot of Red Sox fans out there - seeing from the initial reaction - are very excited about Larry Lucchino leaving the front office of the Boston Red Sox. And I would caution you," said Merloni. "You've got to remember, when Theo Epstein took over as a young general manager, Larry Lucchino had a very powerful voice. Remember those years? '03, '04, '05. Those are pretty good years.

"When did things go awry? To me it was after the 2007 season when Theo had his power… There were mistakes that were made, no question about it. But I would caution Red Sox fans who are overly excited Larry Lucchino left. Quite frankly, I think you want him more involved."
