Merloni: Flexibility remains after Victorino signing

You'd think that in a contract year, Shane Victorino would have put up some better numbers.

But his.261 average, 11 home runs, 55 RBI, .704 OPS, and 39 steals in 154 games hardly get the job done.

None the less, Boston signed Victorino to a three-year 39 million contract.

Victorino can, however, play multiple outfield postions, which will certainly help Boston over the long season.

Lou Merloni has his take on the signing.

"Everything pointed to it if you listend to Ben Cherington over the last few days, he said he wants a right fielder who can also play center. And he love to have a left handed hitter out there and ideally a switch hitter. So it pointed to Shane Victorino."

It also allows Boston to shop Jacoby Ellsbury a bit over the offseason now that they have a proven player who can step in.
