Red Sox Manager John Farrell did a 180 from his pregame press conference to his postgame press conference.
Farrell said before the game that as long as Jon Lester was with the team on Wednesday, he'd make his scheduled start.
After the Red Sox 4-2 loss to the Blue Jays, Farrell had a different message: Lester had now been scratched.
"In light of all the uncertainty surrounding Jon Lester," explained Farrell, "it's probably in everyone's best interest that he does not make that start. So Brandon [Workman] will be recalled."
There was no word on whether the decision to miss the start came from Lester or Farrell, but at the time of the announcement no trade had been made.
Trading Lester is certainly not something Farrell is for, though the decision is not his. The two are close, and Farrell hopes Lester stays in Boston.
"Someone asked me a question earlier about having experienced a lot of success and a lot of challenges," Farrell said, "and my only response is I hope there are many more to experience with him. The realty of the game is what we're living right now in certain individual cases, but I'm always optimistic and hopeful that he'll remain in a Red Sox uniform."
A corresponding roster move will be made in the morning to open a spot for Workman.
