Gammons: Crawford's hard work strained injury more

Carl Crawford's first season with the Red Sox was a bust, that much we know.

But Crawford hasn't been able make up for it yet this season, as he's been hampered by a wrist and elbow injury.

Pater Gammons, on Felger and Mazz Friday, touched upon Crawford's current situation and perhaps the reason why the elbow issue has become a serious concern.

"I think that the thing that seems to me which is still so odd is he's never seemed comfortable at all here. And I think probably the injury is accentuated by the fact that he worked too hard. He would disappear for like three hours taking swings. Spring training he'd go in there- remember he had a couple setbacks from the wrist because he was trying to do too many swings.

"And I wonder if his offseason conditioning program, and all the hitting, he didn't do anything for the normal baseball activity -- just throwing. You just wonder how much of the swings and how much hard work he does with his trainer leads to not doing enough baseball exercise and therefore breaking down with the elbow. We really have no idea if and when he's coming back this season."
