Many Red Sox fans were disappointed by the fact that the team dealt Jon Lester instead of signing him to a contract extension.
Michael Felger believes if it were the Patriots letting go of a star player, fans would be more accepting with the decision made by Bill Belichick.
"I think there's more baseball GMs out there as fans," said Merloni. "I think the salary structure has everything to do with it… For the Red Sox, there's no salary cap. If you let a guy go people are screaming, 'why.'"
"Every baseball fan understands the salary cap in baseball. They understand there isn't one. When you come out with a report that says the Patriots only have $12 million to spend this year on the salary cap, so it's not realistic that they're going to sign two guys worth $10 million. As a fan you accept that.
