Farrell: Sox ‘haven't considered' demoting Castillo

KANSAS CITY -- In the last week, outfielder Rusney Castillo has become something of a forgotten man with the Red Sox.

Castillo was missing from the starting lineup Friday for the fourth time in the last five games. With the Sox facing righthander Yohan Pino, John Farrell opted to go with left-handed hitting Alejando De Aza in right field.

Castillo has had a disappointing season since joining the Red Sox, putting up a .229/.260/.286 slash line with just six RBI.

It's been suggested that Castillo might benefit more from playing every day at Triple A if he's not going to get regular playing time in the big leagues, but John Farrell said Friday that the Sox haven't talked about demoting Castillo.

"I can't say that there's been discussion about that specifically,'' said Farrell. "We're trying to put the best lineup on the field for a given night, but that's not to say that Rusney doesn't factor into that at some point, but given the history that De Aza's had against Pino (5-for-7), that's the alignment here tonight.''

De Aza isn't the only one standing between Castillo and more playing time. Brock Holt has hit .408 in the last 13 games, though this past week, Holt has filled in more at second base for the ailing Dustin Pedroia.

With Pedroia set to return to the lineup Saturday, however, it seems a given that Holt will continue to see the lion's share of the playing time in right.

"You're right -- (we have to figure out) Where do the at-bats come from?'' said Farrell. "That will all be talked about at the appropriate time, but we haven't considered making a roster move, specific to that.''
