BOSTON - Stephen Drew joined the Pawtucket Red Sox in Norfolk, Va., Friday night and is scheduled to play nine innings at shortstop Saturday and Sunday.

The expectation is that Drew will probably join the Sox in Cleveland on Monday, the first day he's eligible after being optioned to the minors to get some at-bats and get back into game shape.

"We do have a right-hander, left-hander and right-hander in Cleveland for that three-game series,'' said manager John Farrell, "so hopefully Stephen is available to us starting on Monday.''

Drew has had 15 at-bats on his rehab between Single-A Greenville and Triple-A Pawtucket and has struck out seven times, but Farrell isn't concerned about those numbers.

"By his own design, he wanted to see as many pitches as possible,'' said Farrell, "knowing that it was going to be abbreviated number of at-bats. He just wanted to track the ball as much as possible. We know it's a bottom-line game here, but we're trusting the fact that this is a veteran player getting back into shape.''

Farrell and the Sox also understand that he'll still be getting his timing back after joining the Sox.

"He's a rhythm type of hitter,'' said Farrell, "and timing and playing every day is key to that to maintain it, to hone it. We're not at any point to rush to any evaluation that's going to be a determining factor on whether he's activated Monday or later on. We know this is going to be a process for a while and we're fully expecting of that.''
