David Ortiz slugs 500th career home run

David Ortiz became the 27th player in MLB history to hit 500 career home runs on Saturday.

Ortiz smacked a Matt Moore knuckle curve to deep right center field, notching No. 500, in the top of fifth inning to put the Red Sox up 8-0 over the Rays.

In the first inning, Ortiz hit No. 499, a three-run shot to right field.

Saturday's homers were Ortiz’s 33rd and 34th of the season, and he now has 19 in 50 games since the All-Star break.

It might be a lost season for the Red Sox, but Ortiz has shown new life in the second half.

The 500 home run club has a new member; now it's only a matter of how far up the charts Ortiz can climb over the remainder of his historic career.
