The Red Sox managerial search took an unexcpected turn late Wednesday night, as multiple reports indicate that Red Sox candidate Dale Sveum was offered the managerial position by Theo Epstein and the Chicago Cubs.
CSNNE.com Red Sox Insider Sean McAdam can confirm that Sveum was offered the Cubs job. It's not certain whether or not he will take the job, but it's likely that he will.
There was always the feeling that if Sveum was offered the position by both clubs, he'd lean towards Chicago.
Red Sox GM Ben Cherington confirmed earlier Wednesday night that Pete Mackanin was informed that he was out of the running for the Sox' position.
As of early Wednesday, Sandy Alomar, Jr., and Gene Lamont had not been contacted by the Red Sox in regards to a second interview. The Sox are, however, set to widen their managerial search, according to Sox president Larry Lucchino.
They will not ask to interview any current MLB managers, Ben Cherington told reporters.
Before initial interviews got underway, the Dodgers' Tim Wallach and the Rays' Dave Martinez were thought to be potential candidates, but those options never came to fruition.

A clause in Wallach's contract with the Dodgers prevents him from interviewing with the Sox, reports WEEI.com. The clause states that teams have a short window to ask for an interview once the season ends, and the Red Sox didn't put in a request during that perod.
