Cross Examination: Valentine, Ortiz, player culture

Share

Bob Neumeier, Dan Shaughnessy, and Steve Buckley talk all things Red Sox heading into the offseason.

The first topic is David Ortiz and Bobby Valentine. Why did Valentine say Ortiz quit on the team? Even if it's true, he shouldn't have, according to Shaughnessy.

"This was totally unnecessary," he said. "It's true; I believe what he said. But at the same time, why does he need to do that at this time? It was another ill-timed, ill-chosen decision by the manager."

And speaking of Ortiz, what of this rumored two-year deal the Sox are working on? All three agree that it's a bad decision -- "preposterous" said Buckley.

And hopefully the player coddling from front office is over and done with too. No more team meetings with front office and no manager, and no more front office leaving their manager out to dry.
