Brandon Workman undergoes Tommy John surgery

BOSTON -- Red Sox righthander Brandon Workman underwent Tommy John surgery Monday in Pensacola, Fla. Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure.

Workman was sidelined late in spring training with some elbow soreness and placed on the disabled list April 13, retroactive to April.

At the time, the Red Sox were hopeful that rest and rehab would be enough to get Workman back on the field. He underwent a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection and was ordered not to throw for several weeks.

More recently, Workman was shifted to the 60-day disabled list and soon after, it was determined that the best course of action was Tommy John surgery, in which a tendon is transferred from another part of the body to help stabilize a torn or sprained ligament.

Recovery time is usually anywhere from 12-to-15 months, meaning Workman will likely not return to the mound much before the 2016 All-Star break.

In two seasons with the Sox, Workman has appeared 39 games, 18 of which were starts.

He is the second Red Sox player to undergo Tommy John surgery this season. Catcher Christian Vazquez had the procedure performed -- also by Andrews -- in the final week of spring training.
