NBA Commissioner Adam Silver joins SportsNet Central's Bob Neumeier at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference to discuss the use of analytics in the NBA and other NBA topics.
Professional sports is all about the latest 'edge', whether it be training techniques, a change in the valuation of particular skills or the newest information.
The NBA is no different and Silver says the league uses analytics to study trends, help set and monitor dynamic ticket pricing, and improve the product on the floor.
"That’s where I think the opportunity is in the short term," says Silver. "To bring youth basketball, AAU basketball, college basketball and NBA basketball together to promote this great sport... Ultimately, the goal is how do we make the game better? How do we make it more free-flowing? How do we ensure the players have the freedom to show their fantastic athletic ability?"
Silver also addresses the concept of 'tanking' and says it's important not to confuse tanking (intentionally losing a game) with re-building through a long-term focus.
