On Thursday night, Tommy Heinsohn and other ex-Celtics will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1974 Celtics championship at an event at Ned Devine's at Faneuil Hall in Boston. That was Tommy's first title as Celtics coach.
In the TD Mailbag segment before the Celtics-Hawks game, Tommy was asked what his favorite championship was as a Celtics player or coach?
Of course, that '74 title is right up there.
"The first time you win anything either as a player or coach is very memorable," Heinsohn said. "So, my rookie year , we won the first Celtics championship and in '74 we won my first coaching championship."
In '57, Heinsohn had 35 points and 23 rebounds in a double-overtime Game 7 victory over the St. Louis Hawks. In '74, the Celtics, with Heinsohn at the helm, beat Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the Bucks in Milwaukee in Game 7 to win the title.
