Celtics release ex-Providence forward Ben Bentil

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Celtics moved one step closer to getting their roster down to the league maximum by waiving former Providence College forward Ben Bentil.

The move gets Boston’s roster down to 16 players, one more than the league allows teams to have. The need to be at 15 by 5 p.m. Monday.

Bentil will have the option of signing with Boston’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.

But Danny Ainge, the C's president of basketball operations, anticipates Bentil, a second-round draft pick (51st overall) this past June, will continue his professional basketball career elsewhere.

“I think that Ben will look for other opportunities,” Ainge said. “We’re so loaded at that position with Jaylen [Brown] and Jae Crowder and Kelly Olynyk and Al Horford … we have a lot of guys that play the four [power forward] position. I think he might want to look somewhere that has more of an opportunity.”

Ainge added, “Ben was great. He had great energy, great enthusiasm from the day he showed up here. Had a great attitude. We love Ben. We’re rooting hard for him to have success and I think he will.”

Bentil appeared in three preseason games for the Celtics, averaging 5.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
