Celtics announce Kelly Olynyk has undergone right shoulder surgery

BOSTON – Kelly Olynyk underwent right shoulder surgery on Tuesday and will begin rehabilitation immediately.

While the Boston Celtics did not indicate when Olynyk would return to action, the 7-foot big man told CSN on Sunday that if he were to have surgery it would sideline him for five months.

Having the surgery now also means that Olynyk will not play this summer for the Canadian National team, which is still trying to qualify for this summer’s Olympics in Rio.

“It’s hard to give up, Olympics,” Olynyk told CSN. “But when you do look at it, if you get hurt it’s even worse to give up the next season. It’s a tough decision.”

Olynyk completed his third season with the Celtics, averaging 10.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 40.5 percent on 3s.
