Patrice Bergeron and Tuukka Rask both undergo successful surgeries

The announcement of post-season surgeries is always a time-honored tradition for any hockey club once their NHL season has come to a close, and the Bruins had a couple of procedures to announce on Tuesday afternoon. Both Patrice Bergeron (sports hernia) and Tuukka Rask (right groin) had successful surgeries this week with both players expected to be back to full strength when training camp opens next fall.

Bergeron underwent a successful sports hernia repair on May 8 by Dr. Brian Busconi and Dr. Demetrius Litwin, and Rask underwent a successful right groin surgery on May 9 by Dr. Peter Asnis. Both players also participated in the World Cup of Hockey last fall, and continued a long string of players that battled through injuries this season after participating in the elite international tournament while other players were slowly ramping up in NHL training camps.

Bergeron suffered his injury in the final practice prior to the start of the 2016-17 regular season, and missed the first three games of the season before getting off to a very slow start to the year while clearly playing through discomfort. Rask similarly suffered his groin injury in the first game of the regular season and endured a handful of moments during the season when it caused him problems, and forced him to miss individual starts on a couple of occasions.

Still, both Bergeron and Rask logged full seasons for the Black and Gold and played through the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with injuries that were clearly nagging at them over the full course of the year. Don Sweeney said two weeks ago that Kevan Miller (shoulder) and Frank Vatrano (foot) were also getting checked out by the Bruins medical staff before getting cleared health-wise following the season.

But it appears surgeries have been ruled out for both of those players now that the entire Bruins team is settling into the offseason.

“Kevan Miller’s got a shoulder, bicep area that he’s been…he’ll have subsequent testing to make sure he’s OK. I don’t think that there’s anything there, but to make sure. Frank [Vatrano] will subsequent follow-up on his foot to make sure there’s nothing there,” said Sweeney during the Bruce Cassidy presser back at the end of April. “As you know, [Vatrano] had surgery in the first part of the year. Just making sure we do our due diligence with any guys that had any types of injury.”
