Miller, McQuaid, Czarnik injured, Ehrhoff leaves Bruins camp

RIGHTON, Mass. – Adam McQuaid, Austin Czarnik and Kevan Miller look like they might all be on the sidelines for the Bruins to start the season this week.

McQuaid is day-to-day with an injury sustained in the middle of last week, Miller is being evaluated for an injury that happened in an overtime preseason Saturday win against the Flyers and Czarnik is out while going through the concussion protocol after sustaining a head shot from Flyers cheap shot D-man Radko Gudas last weekend.

The injuries to Miller and McQuaid mean rookies Brandon Carlo and Robbie O’Gara are still with the NHL team after impressive preseason performances and Riley Nash was centering the third line between Matt Beleskey and Jimmy Hayes in Czarnik’s absence. Christian Ehrhoff was also still with the team for Monday’s practice, but has decided not to sign with the Bruins after learning that he wasn’t going to be one of their top-six defensemen, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

“McQuaid is day-to-day and Miller is getting evaluated today, so we’ll find out more. Obviously it was a shoulder to the head injury, and [Czarnik] is day-to-day as he goes through the concussion situation. We’re just being cautious with him, and we’ll see where it goes,” said Claude Julien. “There are still some injuries here that keep us in [roster] limbo a little bit. We have to look at that, but right now we’re cutting down to a much lower number. We’ll go from there.

“That doesn’t that there won’t be changes along the way when injured players start coming back. We’ll have to make more decisions. For now, with the situation that we’re in, this [roster] is closer to being stable than not [stable].”

What exactly does that mean?

Well, it sounds like the Bruins might be starting the season with more young players than expected and injuries will allow Don Sweeney and Co. a little time to deal with a situation where they’ve got a surplus of NHL-ready defensemen than their roster will allow for.
