Andrej Meszaros will be scratched for the 26th time this season when the Boston Bruins suit up against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Tampa Times Forum on Saturday night. Claude Julien told reporters in Tampa that the newly acquired defenseman will sit out for the Bruins for the second consecutive game since the B’s sent a third round pick to Philadelphia for him, and new D-man Corey Potter will be a healthy scratch as well.
Instead it will be the same six defensemen from Thursday night’s win over the Capitals, and it’s likely to be the same six defensemen (Zdeno Chara, Johnny Boychuk, Dougie Hamilton, Matt Bartkowski, Torey Krug, Kevan Miller) until there’s an injury or prolonged period of bad play from one of the established players.
There seems little reason to sit anyone after a nearly perfective defensive game against the high-powered Capitals that held them to zero goals, and a paltry 16 shots on net with zero penalties called on the Black and Gold as well. It will be challenging to keep that up, but that’s the charge for a Bruins team that starts three games against divisional opponents with the tilt against Tampa.
