Luongo regrets his comments about Thomas

Roberto Luongo regrets the comments he made about Tim Thomas during the Stanley Cup Final, according to an interview with Radio-Canada at a golf tournament he hosted in Quebec on Tuesday.

The Vancouver Canucks defeated the Bruins in Game 5 after Maxim LaPierre scored off a rebound while Thomas was outside of the paint. Following his team's 10 victory, Luongo criticized Thomas's style of play.

When asked if he regretted what he said, Luongo admitted that he did.

Translated from radio-canada.ca:

Yes, definitely," he said. "If I could do it over again, I wouldn't say it. I didn't think it would create that kind of buzz. After Game 5, I've never been that emotional and I got carried away.
"It's not hard if you're playing in the paint," Luongo said after that game. "It's an easy save for me, but if you're wandering out and aggressive like he does, that's going to happen. He might make some saves that I won't, but in a case like that, we want to take advantage of a bounce like that and make sure we're in a good position to bury those."

In response to the backlash against his original assertion, Luongo defended himself by saying that he had been "pumping Thomas's tires ever since the series started. I haven't heard one nice thing he had to say about me. That's the way it is."

Thomas shrugged the comments off, expressing that he didn't realize it was his job to "pump Luongo's tires."

Luongo's words did not hurt Thomas's play as he allowed two goals in the third period of a 52 win in Game 6 and then shut the Canucks out of Game 7 to bring the Stanley Cup to Boston.
