After watching Tuukka Rask play three games in four days, the Bruins will opt for backup goaltender Chad Johnson on Saturday afternoon against the Carolina Hurricanes. It will be Johnson’s fourth start of the season in Boston’s 23rd game, and the B’s netminder will be looking to build on the 2-1-0 record and 2.30 goals against average and .917 save percentage thus far this season.
His last game against the Columbus Blue Jackets was probably his best, and Johnson’s performance should keep getting better as his starts become a little more frequent with the schedule beginning to bunch up. Cam Ward will be in net for Carolina, and Adam McQuaid will miss his seventh game due to a lower body injury. Claude Julien indicated that McQuaid is getting very close to a return after the rangy blueliner skated on his own this morning at TD Garden.
“He’s not ready yet,” said Julien. “He’s very, very close.”
McQuaid’s absence means that 26-year-old rookie Kevan Miller gets his second straight start after impressing Claude Julien and the Bruins coaching staff in his debut Thursday night vs. the Blues.
