Haggerty's Morning Skate: Even sportswriters are ‘good dudes'

Here are all the links from the hockey world and what I’m reading, while saddened by the fact that another shooting tragedy has happened in our country with little being done to stop a problem that feels very unique to the USA. This simply doesn’t happen anywhere else like it does here, and it needs to stop.

*A blog called the Pens Initiative wanted to recognize Penguins writer Josh Yohe as a “good dude.” In this world of cynicism and snark it’s enough to warm your heart.

*PHT writer Ryan Dadoun has the Montreal Canadiens adding veteran assistant coach Craig Ramsay to their staff as a “coaching consultant.” It’s an interesting development given that he was one of Claude Julien’s assistants in Boston, and has some institutional knowledge of the Bruins players and coaches.

*The Calgary Flames have signed defenseman Mark Giordano to a six-year contract extension that pretty much ensures that he’ll retire a Flame.

*Puck Daddy asks “what if the NHL doesn’t expand to Las Vegas and Quebec City” as everybody expects them to in the next few years.

*Devin Setoguchi is going to have a tough time cracking the Maple Leafs lineup as a veteran trying out at training camp.

*Who else but Don Cherry and his beloved Blue would be a welcomed sight on National Dog Day? Here’s a shot of Grapes and his famous Pit Bull back in 1979, courtesy of SI.

*The New Jersey Devils had added Belmont, Mass. native Patrick Rissmiller as a development coach similar to Jay Pandolfo’s role with the Black and Gold.

*The Winnipeg Jets should trade a defenseman and dealing away Dustin Byfuglien makes particular else. Trading Byfuglien to the Bruins is another move that really makes some sense, but they will be looking for a haul perhaps equal or greater to the one Boston received for Milan Lucic over the summer. That’s a big price tag, particularly if you’re unsure about resigning the player beyond his walk year.

*For something completely different: here’s a fun video of a couple of anchors in suits re-enacting a Miami scrimmage after they were booted from practice.
