Four-goal second period carries Bruins past Flyers, 6-3

BOSTON – The Bruins came in with a chance to do some damage against one of the Eastern Conference teams they’re going head-to-head with for the playoffs.

Well, damage was done as the Bruins scored four second-period goals en route to a solid 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday afternoon at TD Garden.

The Flyers scored the game’s first goal a couple of minutes into the first period, but it mostly all Black and Gold after that with power-play fireworks, a five-point day from Brad Marchand and the kind of offense that hasn’t been uncorked on home ice often enough this season.

The Bruins tied things up in the first period on Marchand’s 21st career short-handed goal when he blocked a Sean Couturier shot at the offensive blue line and then beat Ivan Provorov in a race for the breakaway score. Then the Bruins jumped on top with a pair of goals in the first six minutes of the second period.

David Krejci roofed a top-corner, power-play goal for his 500th career NHL point and Torey Krug simply outhustled the Flyers defenders down the ice before redirecting a Marchand pass behind Flyers goalie Michael Neuvirth.

Patrice Bergeron added his fourth power-play goal of the season to give Boston their second multi-PP goal game since the beginning of November and Zdeno Chara rocked a one-timer from a nifty David Pastrnak cross-ice dish.

Philly closed the second period with a Wayne Simmonds power-play strike to make it a two-goal game, but that’s as close as the Broad Street Bullies were going to get to a Bruins team that put on a good, entertaining hockey show on Saturday afternoon. Marchand added the empty-net goal against the desperate Flyers in the closing minute for his 17th of the season.
