DETROIT -- It’s all about winning jobs for many of the Bruins players tonight headed into tonight’s preseason rematch with the Detroit Red Wings after they embarrassed Boston on home ice Thursday night.
Chad Johnson will get the start and play the full game looking to redeem himself for a poor 30 minutes against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday night in allowing three goals on eight shots. But there will also be plenty of young forwards competing against each other in the same lineup as Reilly Smith, Matt Fraser, Nick Johnson, Jordan Caron, Ryan Spooner and Matthew Lindblad should all be in the lineup against the Winged Wheels.
Claude Julien said the plan is to continue evaluating players battling for roster spots over the next three or four games, and that the Bruins hope to have their opening night lineup in place against the Winnipeg Jets for their final scheduled preseason game in Saskatoon.
“It kind of gives you an indication, we’re really looking at those guys and making sure we have a clear read on what they can bring to our hockey club,” said Claude Julien. “As we get closer to the end we’re going to have to start making decisions so it’s important that we have all those guys in there and give them a chance to showcase what they can bring to our hockey club.
“You want to give them that opportunity because they’ve earned it and they deserve it. For our sake, we need to make the right decisions. The only way to make the right decisions is by watching them play more.”
