BruinsIslanders: 5 from the First

CSNNE.comBOSTON Here are five thoughts from the first period with the Bruins leading the Islanders by a 1-0 score after the first 20 minutes of play at TD Garden.1)Shawn Thornton really defines guts, heart and what a hockey player is all about. Simple as that. During a first period that saw his line (with Gregory Campbell and Daniel Paille) shine as Bostons best on the ice, they finally broke through 00.1 seconds left on the clock with a rebound he slammed past Ricky DiPietro. Thornton just had 40 stitches removed from a gash above his right eye 24 hours earlier, and was mixing it up in front of the net while showing the kind of fire many of his teammates lacked in the third period against the Rangers. Thats why he probably ends up in the lineup against whichever opponent emerges for the first round of the playoffs. Great stat from NESN.coms Doug Flynn, Thornton and Campbell are first teammates with double-digits in fights and goals since Cam Neely and Nevin Markwart in 1986-87.2)Daniel Paille again playing like a house of fire as well with two shots on net, and a couple of great bids that were turned away only by an on-his-game DiPietro midway through the first period.3)Speaking of DiPietro, he looked exactly like the guy that the Islanders signed to such a ridiculously long deal years ago. Its too bad that the injuries and contract dominate so much of the talk about the Winthrop native because he can be the real deal when hes healthy and would add quite a bit to the Isles if hes 100 percent with all of the talent around him.4)The 5-on-3 needs a lot of work when you can only manage a pair of shots and nothing that amounts to a serious scoring chance. Thats what happened early in the first period after John Tavares and Trevor Gillies were both whistled off at the same time, and the Bs had two minutes of 5-on-3 action. Think they could use Tyler Seguins offensive talents on the PP?5)A good 14-save rebound period for Tim Thomas in the first coming off that meltdown effort in the third period against the Rangers.
