Sox aren't looking to platoon positions

WORCESTER -- With jobs up for grabs at shortstop and right field, the Red Sox have some decisions to make during spring training.

At short, the Sox have righthand-hitting Mike Aviles and switch-hitter Nick Punto. In right, meanwhile, the Sox have left-handed Ryan Sweeney and right-handers Cody Ross and Darnell McDonald.

But manager Bobby Valentine, speaking at a Red Sox Town Hall event at Worcester Technical High School Wednesday night, said he won't settle things with platoons.

"I've used them,'' said Valentine. "I'm not averse to sharing positions. But I don't like to limit my players and say, 'He's only going to be just hitting against right-handers or left-handers.' Sometimes that's just the way it works out.''
