Report: Sox make offer to RHP Jackson

By trading away Marco Scutaro, the Sox freed up some imaginary cap space to go after a much-needed starting pitcher.

First, as reported earlier today, they put in an offer for Roy Oswalt.

Now, the word is they also sent an offer out to Edwin Jackson.

Jackson went 12-9 with a 3.79 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 199.2 combined innings between the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals last season. He struck out 148 batters and walked 62.

The eight-year, 28-year-old right-hander spent three seasons on the Tampa Bay Rays (2006-08) and made the All-Star team during the 2009 season with the Detroit Tigers. He's played on six different teams since entering the league in 2003, including the 2011 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals.

If signed, Jackson would make for a nice addition to a Red Sox rotation that has a few question marks leading into the 2012 season.
