Let's get this straight. The talk in Fort Myers is that the Red Sox can't possibly keep both Grady Sizemore and Jackie Bradley Jr.
OK. Makes sense. There's only so many players you can keep on the roster. But why not make changes elsewhere if keeping both centerfielders is best for the team?
What if the Sox chose to deal Jonny Gomes in order to make room? He doesn't exactly light the world on fire with his numbers. And there's always the potential he starts barking about his job if he doesn't get the playing time he thinks he deserves.
On Arbella Early Edition, Trenni Kusnierek, filling in for Gary Tanguay, and Lou Merloni talked about who starts, who sits and who potentially goes in the Sox outfield.
"To me, the guy who gets a pass is Jonny Gomes," Kusnierek said. "I mean I know he's a great soundbite..."
Merloni pointed out that Sizemore, Bradley, and Mike Carp are all left-handed hitters.
"Jonny Gomes is the only guy who can come off that bench who's a right-handed hitter," Merloni said. "Odd man out? I think it's Mike Carp. Teams are interested in Mike Carp."
Merloni then threw a wild card into the mix.
"[Rookie] Bryce Brentz had a great camp," he said.
That piqued Kusnierek's interest. "Ooh, that's a name you don't hear very often." she said.
