FORT MYERS, Fla. – And then there was one. The Red Sox are down to essentially their final roster spot. But, manager John Farrell said Friday morning the roster probably won’t be finalized until Sunday.
Mike Carp?
He’s been told he has made the team.
Clayton Mortensen?
“Right now he’s on our team, he’s in our bullpen,” Farrell said.
Daniel Nava?
“Right now Daniel Nava is likely to be on our Opening Day roster,” Farrell said.
And that leaves…Jackie Bradley Jr.?
“Beyond that, we’re not final,”  Farrell said.
Mortensen, Carp, and Nava are on the 40-man roster, so no roster maneuvering is required for those spots.  Bradley, however, is not.  The Sox 40-man is currently at 40. So, in order to add Bradley the Sox would  have to find a way to take another player off either by a trade, release, or designating someone for assignment.
“We’re at the point where we’re working thru some final roster situations,” Farrell said.
“To get  [Bradley on the 40-man roster] we’ve got to work through the roster to get him to that point,” Farrell said. “So, that’s why it’s not a given.  It’s not an absolute that he’s in New York. So we’ve got some things to work thru. He’s done a  great job. We’ve talked about it, and rightfully so, daily. But we’re not there to officially announce it.”
Rosters have to be set by 3 p.m. Sunday. Farrell said the Sox will likely take up until then to set their roster.
