Talking Points: Red Sox 6, Phillies 2

Share

STAR OF THE GAME: Justin Masterson

Masterson had four perfect innings out of his six and faced one batter over the minimum in another. The only inning the Phils did any damage against him was the third when two walks, two singles and a wild pitch contributed to two runs. Other than that, he was on point. And, as a bonus, he contributed two singles and knocked in a run.

HONORABLE MENTION: Xander Bogaerts

Bogaerts, who had scuffled in his first two games, reached base five times, including a single and a bases-loaded triple in the six-run third inning.

GOAT OF THE GAME: David Buchanan

The Phils starter lasted only three innings, and while the Red Sox didn't hit him that hard -- and the Phils' defense didn't help. Still, Buchanan asked for trouble by issuing four walks, including one with the bases loaded.

TURNING POINT: The Red Sox led 2-0 in the third when Bogaerts sent a twisting fly ball down the right field line. The ball struck just inside the foul line, took a funny bounce past right fielder Jeff Francoeur and resulted in a three-run triple, stretching the Red Sox' lead to 5-0.

BY THE NUMBERS: Masterson became the first Red Sox pitcher in almost 10 years to collect two hits and knock in a run in the same game. The last -- Josh Beckett -- also accomplished the feat at Citizens Bank Park, in 2006.
